New Structure of NIAID Clinical Trial Networks

On June 29, 2006, NIAID announced the restructuring of their HIV/AIDS clinical trial networks. This new structure will better address emerging challenges in HIV treatment and prevention by creating a more integrated, collaborative, and flexible research structure. Within this new organizational structure, NIAID has created one new network, the Microbicides Trial Network, and renamed two networks, International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials and International Network for Strategic Initiatives in Global HIV Trials. The new structure is as follows:

Microbicide Trials Network (MTN) will evaluate the safety and efficacy of microbicides designed to prevent HIV transmission.

International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT), formerly known as Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group (PACTG), will focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and optimizing clinical management of HIV/AIDS, including coinfections and other HIV-related conditions.

International Network for Strategic Initiatives in Global HIV Trials (INSIGHT), formerly known as Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS (CPCRA), will focus on optimizing clinical management of HIV/AIDS, including coinfections and other HIV-related conditions.

AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) will work to optimize clinical management of HIV/AIDS, including coinfections and other HIV-related conditions, and will act as a liaison between scientists and clinical investigators in new anti-HIV drug development.

HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) will evaluate the safety and efficacy of nonvaccine strategies to prevent HIV transmission.

HIV Vaccine Trials Network ( HVTN) will evaluate the safety and efficacy of preventive and therapeutic HIV vaccines.
