March 10, 2013
March 10 marks the eighth annual observance of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The purpose of this awareness day is to share information and encourage action to reduce the burden of HIV/AIDS among women and girls.
The following statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) underscore the impact of HIV/AIDS on women:
- One in 139 women in the United States will receive a diagnosis of HIV infection at some point in her lifetime.
- In 2009, there were an estimated 11,200 new HIV infections among women in the United States. That year, women represented 51% of the U.S. population and 23% of those newly infected with HIV.
