Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

May 19th, 2009

May 19, 2009 commemorates the fifth annual National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The purpose of this awareness day is to focus on the fight against HIV-related discrimination and the stigma HIV carries particularly in the API culture and communities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2007 HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report, the estimated number of HIV/AIDS cases among Asians/Pacific Islanders is steadily increasing. It is hoped that raising awareness and educating the API population about HIV/AIDS will diminish the stigma surrounding the disease and bring the API community together in the fight against the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS.
