Caribbean-American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
June 8, 2011
June 8 is the sixth annual observance of Caribbean-American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (CAHAAD). The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in Caribbean communities in the United States and its territories.
According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the Caribbean has been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. The Caribbean has the second highest level of adult HIV prevalence (approximately 1.0%). However, HIV prevalence varies considerably among Caribbean countries, between 0.1% and 3%.
CAHAAD is a community mobilization initiative that focuses on:
- Education about HIV/AIDS
- Routine Testing for HIV/AIDS
- HIV/AIDS Treatment for all those who need it
- Involvement of Caribbeans in the fight against HIV/AIDS
The links on this page provide information about CAHAAD and resources on HIV prevention, treatment, and research, including information specifically related to Caribbean communities.
