HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 11 grants totaling $25.6 million to support the training and education of health care professionals treating people living with HIV/AIDS.
"These grants will help us further the training and education of those health care providers who treat people with HIV and AIDS," Secretary Thompson said. "In the fight against AIDS, all Americans with this disease deserve the most current prevention and treatment information from knowledgeable providers."
HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded the grants under its AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETCs) program, which provides education, training, and consultation through a network of regional and national training centers to health care professionals treating HIV-infected patients. HRSA's HIV/AIDS Bureau manages the program.
In addition to the 10 regional AETCs funded by today's grants, HRSA also funded one National Minority AETC to build capacity for HIV/AIDS care among minority health care professionals, with special emphasis on building capacity in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges.
The grants are funded under Part F of the Ryan White CARE Act. Through its CARE Act programs, HRSA helps an estimated 530,000 poor and uninsured individuals with HIV/AIDS obtain primary health care, support services and life-sustaining medications each year.
Since the CARE Act was first funded in fiscal year 1991, nearly $10 billion has been awarded in grants to provide needed health care and associated services for people living with HIV/AIDS. A list of the fiscal year 2002 AETC grant awards follows:
