National Latino AIDS Awareness Day

October 15 is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD). The purpose of the annual observance is to raise awareness to help stem the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Hispanic/Latino community.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the HIV epidemic disproportionately impacts the Hispanic/Latino community. Hispanics/Latinos comprise 15% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 18% of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in the 34 states with long-term, confidential, name-based HIV reporting in 2007.

The theme of this year's NLAAD is "United: We can stop HIV and prevent AIDS." The theme speaks to the importance of working together to improve access to quality HIV/AIDS services within Hispanic/Latino communities nationwide.
