HIV/AIDS Awareness Days

National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

September 27, 2011

September 27 is the fourth annual observance of National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The purpose of this day is to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS among gay men.

In the United States, HIV/AIDS has disproportionately affected gay men since it was first recognized in the early 1980s. According to the 2009 HIV Surveillance Report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men who have sex with men (MSM) accounted for 57% of all the diagnoses of HIV infections in the 40 states with confidential name-based HIV reporting. In addition, the annual number of diagnosed HIV infections attributed to male-to-male sexual contact has continued to increase over the past several years.

It is important for gay men to understand their risks, learn how to protect themselves and others, and to encourage gay men to get tested for HIV. Research shows that many MSM who know they are HIV-infected change their behaviors in order to lower the risk of transmitting HIV to their partners.

The links on this page provide information about National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and resources on HIV prevention, treatment, and research, including information specifically related to gay men.
