HIV/AIDS Awareness Days

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day

October 15, 2011

October 15 is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD). The purpose of this annual observance is to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS in the Hispanic/Latino community. According to the 2009 surveillance data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Hispanic/Latino community continues to be disproportionately affected by HIV infection. Of people newly diagnosed with HIV infection in the 40 states with confidential name-based reporting, 18% were Hispanic/Latino. However Hispanics/Latinos represented only 13% of the total population in the same geographic area. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is committed to addressing this disparity in the Hispanic/Latino community. The theme of NLAAD this year is “Latinos Unite! Let's stay Healthy! Get Tested for HIV!”

The links on this page provide information about NLAAD and resources about HIV prevention, treatment, and research, including information specifically related to the Hispanic/Latino community.
